COM 201: Wednesday night updates (4/20)

Hi 201:

Great to see Mike B., Sara, Taylor, Jacob, Amy, and Kelly today at the Coffee Hound (hope I didn’t miss anyone in my list—totally unintentional if so!) I will try to do that again next week so make a suggestion if you want me to try somewhere different. I will also change the time to catch people with conflicts.

I posted Artifact grades tonight for what you have posted on your blog. I didn’t post the “Soul of the Citizen” article response that we did in class yet. I also made comments but then realized that I did it in a way that I don’t think Blackboard will let you see them (GRR! Dumb me!) so if you have questions about why you got a grade, please see me.

I want to let you know that I was really impressed with many of your Artifacts. You have done a great job overall with this assignment. I really notice a lot of improvement for many of you over the course of the semester; you have gotten REALLY good at connecting material to class concepts—this is evidence of deep learning and that is awesome! The Museum artifacts were a lot of fun to read and I’m really glad that you all seemed to get a lot out of the experience.

I know that many of you are hard at work right now on M 9. Keep it up. You can do it! Try to take the time that you have left and make a plan for yourself about how you can finish up your draft. You just need to turn in the grid (what is posted on the website). Please type your answers right into it. When you get to actions, you can bullet or number 1., 2., 3., 4., and so forth. Similar method for tactics.

PLEASE remember that tomorrow you will need to bring a copy of M9 to use IN CLASS, so if you turn it in electronically, bring a printed copy. If you turn it in in paper, then bring 2 copies. This will allow us to do peer reviews in class tomorrow.

Speaking of class tomorrow, we will be discussing M 10 and doing peer reviews of each others work. This will help move you forward on the assignment.

On Tuesday, you will need to be finished with ALL artifacts and turn in participation sheets. I will return M 9 draft 1. We will also have a work day on M 10.

I know we are coming down to the end and you are very stressed with all of your classes and work. I promise that a month from now, you will miss this class!!!

Kidding (sort of!) but at least in a month it will be summer break!

Hang in there. I will be up for a while for you late texters ;0)

Reading assignment for Tuesday

Hi 201:

Since we had our work day Thursday, we will spend Tuesday discussing the readings.

Here is what you need to read:

P. 209-238
and
P. 261-300
Pay attention to:
p. 211-212 Components of a Campaign
p. 224 for The Components of a Campaign
p. 284 Actions and Tactics
Here are some questions that you should be thinking about as you do the reading and prepare your campaign plan:
1. What is the landscape of your issue? In other words, what is the history and potential future of your issue? This should be evidence-based–not just your observations or opinions. If you do this well, it will involve research.
2. What do you know about your target(s)/secondary target(s)? In other words, who cares about your issue and has power in relationship to it?
3. What strategy/ies are you using? Why? (p. 185-195: I realize this isn’t part of the reading but you will not be on the right track if you haven’t read this!)

Interesting link and reminder

Hi 201:

Here is an interesting link to a story about the movement in Egypt in the Chronicle of Higher Education.

Also, please remember that tomorrow is our field trip to the McLean County Museum of History. We will be focusing our visit on the A Turbulent Time: Perspectives of the Vietnam War exhibit.

Please remember to meet in the back of Fell Hall (in the parking lot near the Fitness Center) AT 2pm. The buses will leave promptly at 2pm for the Museum.

Please bring your homework to turn in as your ticket to get on the bus.

Please remember, you will be completing an artifact about the visit to the museum that will be due on Thursday.

I think you will really enjoy this exhibit, especially the ISU artifacts. I know for many of you this is your first visit to the museum so I hope you’re looking forward to it.
